Performing Chinese Identities and Belonging:

Sino-Soundscapes of Encounters, Difference and Tensions in Malaysia and Beyond

It is estimated that about 50 million Chinese live outside of the Chinese mainland at the turn of the millennium. What is the meaning of being Chinese in the new places of abode? This presentation illustrates that the diverse Chinese actively mediate, transform and transmit their identities through selected soundscapes to create a sense of belonging in the countries they have made home. They perform their encounters and differences with others as well as tensions in society through localization and hybridity. Using Malaysia as a case study, this paper not only contributes to research about the emergent global Sino-soundscapes but helps us make sense of the soundscapes of other migrants around the world (including Europe) today. It adds to the colonial, state, museum, and archival studies that focus mainly on the cultures of dominant groups.
